Shedeur Sanders will get a huge chance as the starting quarterback this weekend when his Cleveland Browns take on the Las Vegas Raiders in a Week 12 showdown. Although Sanders played last week during their loss against the Baltimore Ravens, this will be his first time starting.
Everyone is talking about how well he will do and the expectations around him. If he is looking for advice, he doesn’t have to go any further than his own father.
Deion Sanders talked about his son’s first start while speaking with Mark Johnson, and he calmly and plainly summed up wisdom for Shedeur to take to the field on Sunday.
“Take your time, see it, get completions, use your check downs, don’t try to be more than you are,” Deion Sanders said. “Just relax and do what you’ve done your whole life. Study, prepare, understand the defense. He usually studied so much, he knew what they were going to do before they did it. So, I expect that kind of preparation and that type of understanding. I know he doesn’t have the leeway he had here offensively to change a lot of things when he sees it. But I hope to God that he relaxes and plays his game.”
Shedeur Faces Pressure Despite Deion’s Calm Advice
Deion makes it all seem so simple, but everyone knows it’ll be much more difficult than that. Under the bright lights and loud roar of the crowd, it’ll be hard for Shedeur to simply “relax” and play like he always had.
Not trying to be more than he naturally is is good advice, but that may not make Browns fans happy. They will demand much more from Shedeur, especially after last week’s disappointing performance, where he completed only four of his 16 pass attempts for just 47 yards.
If he comes out and has another game just like Week 11’s, people will speculate if he really is ready for such a big role and if he’ll ever be truly prepared. And if the Browns fall to the Raiders and their lacking defense, it’ll be another huge embarrassment for the team, and he will shoulder much of the blame.
Deion’s advice to his son is heartfelt, but the chances of Shedeur being completely relaxed for this upcoming game might be slim.
