Deshaun Watson has heard every version of the outside narrative surrounding his standing on this roster, from questions about his health to skepticism about whether he can still be the answer at quarterback for the Browns. Watson sat down for an exclusive interview with Bernie Kosar as part of the team’s Training Camp Insider series and addressed the competition.
He explained exactly how he views the day-to-day nature of competing for his job in Cleveland.
“It’s been great. I think me and all of the quarterbacks have been doing a good job of taking it day to day. Trying to take advantage of all the opportunities we have. But at the same time, it’s fun. That’s what this game is about. That’s what this business is about. It’s always competition. For me, every day is a competition to keep my job because there’s only one position that can go out there playing quarterback.”
Two Achilles surgeries and a major shoulder procedure have limited him to just 19 games since the 2020 season, and the Browns have won only eight games combined over the last two years.
Shedeur Sanders, for his part, has continued fighting for every rep available to him, and recent practice numbers have shown the kind of statistical progress that keeps this competition genuinely unsettled heading toward the preseason. Monken has been clear that alternating first-team reps will continue right up until the joint practice against Buffalo on August 20, and Watson sounds like a player who has fully accepted that structure rather than resenting it.
With the preseason opener against Chicago now less than two weeks away, Watson’s words paint a picture of a quarterback who has made peace with the uncertainty surrounding his own future while still showing up each day determined to win the job outright.
