The Cleveland Browns are attempting to figure out who will be their starting quarterback in the new season, and it’s coming down to Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. With Sanders, the team would get youth and health. With Watson, they would receive years of experience and knowledge.
But according to Chris Simms, the Browns are just wasting time with Watson, and they should stop dragging him through this process and instead focus on Sanders. Simms believes that Sanders’ rise to starting QB is inevitable.
“Why even waste your time with Deshaun Watson, really? Do you think he’s the future of your franchise? I doubt it. The fans and everyone are just not going to accept Deshaun Watson being the starter. I wouldn’t be shocked if he goes out there in the first preseason game and gets booed,” Simms said.
“It’s going to be Shedeur at some point,” he added.
Sanders may eventually be the starting quarterback, but some people believe that competing with Watson will only make him better when he takes on that role. Having to fight for the job could teach Sanders a few things about proving himself.
Watson is about to enter the final year of his massive contract, and most people agree he probably won’t strike a new deal with the Browns.
The Browns want to solely focus on 2026 and then worry about following seasons after that. If they feel that Watson gives them the best shot at upgrading in the new season, they might go with him regardless of all of the uncertainty about his contract and future.
In many ways, Sanders looks like someone a franchise can build around, while Watson appears to be a vet whose time in Cleveland is coming to an end. But this is still a close race.
