With final roster cuts approaching and the regular season drawing closer by the day, Todd Monken continues evaluating potential additions even at this late stage of the offseason calendar. Speaking during a recent press conference, Monken addressed a range of topics surrounding the roster, including specific position groups where the coaching staff remains open to upgrading talent should the right opportunity present itself before the season begins.
Monken laid out which spots on the roster the organization continues monitoring closely for potential improvement.
“I feel good about the guys we’ve got. I think we’re always looking for another edge rusher, a corner, potentially a blocking tight end. You’re looking for guys that you can fill, and that just happens to be one of them,” Monken said.
The mention of edge rusher depth carries significance given everything Cleveland has already invested in that position group this offseason. Jared Verse has emerged as one of the more disruptive young defenders in the league following the Myles Garrett trade, drawing praise from teammates, coaches, and national analysts alike throughout training camp. Even with that level of talent already on the roster, depth remains a premium commodity regardless of how strong the top of a position group looks heading into the regular season. Adding proven depth behind Verse would give the coaching staff additional flexibility to manage snap counts across a long season.
Monken’s reference to cornerback depth similarly makes sense given the recent placement of Damarri Mathis on injured reserve following a training camp injury. Losing any player to injured reserve creates a need for additional competition and depth, particularly at a position as demanding as cornerback across a full 17 game schedule.
Harold Fannin Jr. has continued building chemistry with both Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders despite working through some limitations following offseason surgery, but the need for more blocking help at the position to round out the running game is important.
Browns fans should expect continued moves at these specific positions as the coaching staff works to fill any remaining gaps before the games that count finally begin.
