The Cleveland Browns wide receiver room continues to draw national attention heading into the regular season, and NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein offered an optimistic projection for first-round rookie KC Concepcion in his breakdown of best and worst-case outcomes for the top offensive rookies in the league. Selected 24th overall, Concepcion has been viewed as one of the more polished route runners in this year’s draft class.
Zierlein laid out exactly what a breakout rookie season could look like for Concepcion.
“Best case scenario, as the best separator in this year’s rookie class, Concepcion quickly establishes himself as the Browns’ go to option in the passing game. With Cleveland playing from behind in most games, Concepcion sees his target count grow as the season progresses,” Zierlein wrote.
Zierlein cautioned that spotty quarterback play could just as easily stunt Concepcion’s rookie development, with larger-bodied targets like Denzel Boston and Harold Fannin Jr. potentially drawing more attention in a less consistent passing game. That worst-case scenario underscores just how tightly Concepcion’s rookie production may end up tied to quarterback stability, a question mark that has followed the Browns since before Deshaun Watson was even named the Week 1 starter. Zierlein’s projected stats of 66 catches for 779 yards and 5 touchdowns fall in between those two outcomes, representing a reasonable middle ground for a rookie receiver entering an offense with plenty of moving pieces still being sorted out.
Concepcion’s ultimate role this season will likely come down to factors well beyond his own talent level, including how quickly the rebuilt offensive line gels and which quarterback is under center as the year progresses. Regardless of the exact numbers he puts up, his skill set as a separator gives Cleveland a legitimate weapon to build around as the passing game continues to take shape. For a Browns team still working through plenty of uncertainty across the roster, a productive rookie season from Concepcion would provide a stabilizing bright spot regardless of how the more chaotic storylines at other positions play out.
