The Cleveland Browns still have a ton of work to do in order to get this team headed in the right direction. With a new regime taking over this offseason and so many exciting young talents emerging on both sides of the ball, there is real hope surrounding this team for the first time in years.
Unfortunately, a lot of that hope was squashed when head coach Todd Monken named Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback earlier this week. The decision was likely bigger than him and it has opened the Browns up to once again being a punching bag and the laughing stock of the NFL.
One man who knows a thing or two about clowning on the Browns is former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who went 26-3-1 in his career against Cleveland. On a recent episode of Footbahlin, he took the low-hanging fruit and couldn’t pass up another opportunity to poke fun at the Browns again while discussing the decision to name Watson the starter.
“Just like their playoff hopes, it ended early before it even started,” said Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger has certainly earned the right to punch down on the Browns after dominating them so thoroughly for nearly two decades. Browns fans have certainly heard enough from him, but on this topic, many Browns fans would unfortunately agree with him.
Naming Watson the starter was a polarizing decision to say the least and it’s going to be tough to listen to all the boos he’s set to face in the home opener in Week 3 if he makes it past the first two games on the road. Some fans will never be on his side, and even though he said in his recent controversial postgame presser that he believes the boos are all personal, that’s simply not true. Ben Roethlisberger got himself into a similar mess off the field during his day, and he didn’t get booed because he won two Super Bowls.
Winning solves a lot of problems, and Watson hasn’t done that in Cleveland. We’ll see if he can do it now in what is likely his last shot to prove himself worthy of being a starting QB in the NFL. A lot of people are going to take shots just like Big Ben did here, but all Watson can do is put his head down and block out all that noise.
