There is a new craze going around the NFL right now, and the Cleveland Browns have jumped on board with it. Six teams, including the Browns’ have been using GoPro cameras on their quarterbacks’ helmets during training camp.
These tiny cameras give the coaches a front-row seat to see what the quarterbacks are seeing and doing on the field. In a recent ESPN article by John Keim, new Browns head coach Todd Monken talked about why these cameras have been useful for the team.
“Unless you want to be standing in the huddle to hear what’s actually being relayed from myself, to them, to the players,” Monken said. “And then it allows you to pre-snap and then, post-snap, get an idea where their eyes are. Are they in the right place?”
These cameras give the coaches a ton of new information that might not be caught by watching from the sideline. Monken isn’t the only coach praising the usage of the GoPro camera. Browns quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian also gave his input on the situation.
“So much is done pre-snap, and that’s what the GoPro gives you,” said Bajakian. “It gives you the quarterback’s thought process and his communication.”
The coaching staff isn’t the only ones who enjoy using the GoPros in camp. Quarterback Deshaun Watson also talked about how the cameras have been helping him as well. Watson said he likes the vision it highlights, so he can see how the players are responding through body language and eye contact.
This is likely going to be an extremely useful tool, especially for the Browns. The Browns have three quarterbacks who are rookies or second-year players. These are young players who are still developing their game, and these cameras can do wonders for them.
The usage of the GoPros can show everyone what the quarterback is doing under center. It’ll give the coaches instant feedback to help guide the players in the right direction. These cameras could end up being an extremely useful development tool for the Browns.
