The Cleveland Browns’ 34-10 loss to Jacksonville left very little to feel good about, but one name buried in the box score offered a reason for optimism. While the headlines focused on Deshaun Watson’s poor performance and a pass rush that finished the day without a single pressure, Bleacher Report’s staff pointed to a different defender who actually delivered on Sunday. Mason Graham quietly turned in the kind of performance Cleveland’s front office envisioned when it drafted him fifth overall a year ago.
Bleacher Report broke down why Graham stood out even as the rest of the defense struggled.
“Verse is an excellent defender and he did register a tackle for a loss in his Browns debut. However, last year’s fifth overall draft pick, Graham, proved to be the more disruptive performer. Graham recorded a sack and a pair of tackles for loss while working along the defensive interior. The Browns want to hang their hat on a talented defensive front. Verse and Graham form an excellent starting point,” the B/R NFL Staff wrote.
That sack marked the first full sack of Graham’s career, a milestone that arrived on a day when almost nothing else went right for this defense. Cleveland finished the game with only one total sack as a team, meaning Graham accounted for the entirety of Cleveland’s pressure production in a game where Trevor Lawrence was rarely bothered. Graham’s ability to disrupt plays up the middle stood in contrast to a defense that allowed Jacksonville to convert third downs at a high rate and control the ball for nearly the entire second half.
Jared Verse still recorded a tackle for loss in his debut, even without a pressure to show for it, and his own postgame comments pointed to self-inflicted mistakes.
One strong performance from a second-year player does not erase a 34-10 loss or the broader concerns about this defense generating consistent pressure. But if Graham continues disrupting games from the interior the way he did against Jacksonville, it gives Mike Rutenberg a genuine piece to build the rest of his scheme around as the Browns try to move past their season-opening loss.
