The Cleveland Browns’ offensive line drew plenty of scrutiny heading into Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville, but Todd Monken is walking away from the opener with real confidence in two specific building blocks up front. Austin Barber turned heads with a standout debut after being thrust into the starting lineup on short notice, and Spencer Fano continues developing at left tackle after his first career start. Monken made clear he sees a bright future and loves the long-term outlook for his two young offensive tackles.
“Those two guys are going to be really good players. Austin, for jumping in there and learning early in the week, he’s going to be starting [going forward]. And Spencer is going to continue to grow. I really think we’ve got some young, really good players that are just going to continue to get better and better,” Monken said.
Barber entered the week with almost no experience at guard and questions about his readiness for the matchup. Instead, Barber finished as Cleveland’s highest-graded player per PFF, and Monken naming him the starter going forward removes any doubt about how the coaching staff viewed that debut.
Fano’s situation looks different on paper, given that his overall PFF grade landed near the bottom of the roster in Week 1. But Monken’s praise focuses on the long-term picture rather than a single performance. Learning on the job at one of the most demanding positions in football rarely produces a flawless debut, and Monken’s comments suggest the coaching staff always expected some rough patches along the way.
The offensive line will be a central storyline after Sunday’s performance, and Tampa Bay presents another opportunity for this rebuilt line to show real progress. If Barber and Fano continue trending the way Monken described, it could end up being one of the few genuine positives to emerge from an otherwise difficult season opener.
