Browns’ Loss To Jaguars Had One Silver Lining

One of the major concerns for the Cleveland Browns heading into their season-opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars was how their rebuilt offensive line would fare in their first extended action together. It turns out that those worries were unwarranted.

The offensive line was arguably the Browns’ best unit on either side of the ball in the 34-10 loss. That is even more impressive when you consider that it included two rookie starters, with third-round pick Austin Barber as a late addition at right guard to join first-round left tackle Spencer Fano, and veteran left guard Zion Johnson, right tackle Tytus Howard and center Elgton Jenkins.

Insider Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN revealed a small win for the Browns’ offensive line after Week 1, as it ranked among the best in the league.

“Despite the Browns’ struggles on offense in Week 1, Cleveland’s offensive line graded out well in ESPN’s blocking metrics: T-3rd in pass block win rate; 7th in run block win rate. Both metrics measure how often offensive lines successfully sustain their blocks for at least 2.5 seconds,” Oyefusi posted.

Barber was particularly impressive taking over for Teven Jenkins, who was inactive with a back injury. The former college tackle may have been the starter even if Jenkins were healthy, as he made up a lot of ground after switching positions late in training camp.

Pro Football Focus graded Barber as the best rookie offensive lineman in the league in Week 1, ahead of four other players who were first-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. Among Cleveland’s 17 offensive players, Howard was ranked fourth on the team by PFF. Johnson was sixth, Elgton Jenkins was 14th, and Fano was 16th, ahead of only quarterback Deshaun Watson.

The grades were not necessarily reflected in the overall offensive stats, but it should be noted that the Browns were playing from behind throughout the game. Cleveland gained 87 rushing yards on 22 attempts, but Watson and KC Concepcion accounted for 53 of those yards. Watson was also sacked five times on 27 dropbacks.

It is a credit to veteran offensive line coach George Warhop that the unit was able to hold up, for the most part, while still attempting to build chemistry, and it will look to continue to improve in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
