Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns had a Week 1 game he’d rather forget, but he still addressed the press following his team’s disappointing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Instead of accepting blame and honestly dissecting what went wrong, Watson said that many of the expectations surrounding him and his team are driven by the media.
He claimed that the analysts, writers, and NFL insiders have created expectations that he’s supposed to be throwing for 400 yards and scoring five touchdowns per game. This comment from Watson was not received well. Unsurprisingly, the media he was criticizing had something to say.
Speaking on Get Up, Mike Greenberg was shocked by Watson’s take.
“Oh my goodness. It’s for the media? This is what we’re worried about?” Greenberg said, noting that Watson and his team performed poorly, and that cannot be denied.

Most Browns fans were disappointed, although perhaps not surprised, by what they saw in Week 1. However, they always knew that this team might still be in a tough place this year.
They were hoping that Watson, Todd Monken, and everyone else in Cleveland would handle the loss correctly. They wanted to hear something intelligent, mature, and accurate. Instead, it felt like Watson was settling the score against the media and holding a grudge.
Obviously, the team and Watson have a lot of problems, and they aren’t going to be solved by bickering with the press. This statement from Watson doesn’t inspire a lot of faith in the fans. They want to hear Watson lay out a plan that will avoid another blowout.
The headlines surrounding Watson have been very negative lately, and it’s understandable that he’d feel disgruntled about that. However, the best way to change that is to perform better. At this point, an improvement is mandatory, or else people will be screaming at Monken to replace Watson with Shedeur Sanders.
His job and the future of the team are quite literally on the line. The Browns have plenty to worry about, and Watson focusing on the media isn’t doing him any favors.
At this point, the last thing he needs is more controversy.
