Bruce Drennan Turns Heads With Deshaun Watson Claim

Every quarterback decision in the NFL gets scrutinized from multiple angles, but few carry the layers of speculation attached to how Cleveland handled its own this offseason. Coaches are typically the ones credited or blamed for decisions on the field, yet front office influence and ownership pressure rarely stay hidden for long in a league this connected. That dynamic resurfaced this week around Deshaun Watson’s role as the Browns’ starting quarterback. Veteran broadcaster Bruce Drennan suggested there is more to that decision than what has been said publicly.

Drennan shared what he described as inside information about how the call actually came together.

“I have a source within the Browns organization… who has informed me that Haslam had a BIG say so in that decision,” Drennan said, referring to owner Jimmy Haslam’s involvement in naming Watson the starter.

Head coach Todd Monken has repeatedly said the quarterback decision is his own, telling reporters throughout camp and the preseason that the competition between Watson and Shedeur Sanders was evaluated purely on performance.

Drennan’s claim complicates that narrative. If Haslam truly pushed for Watson to remain the starter, it would suggest the decision was driven as much by the financial commitment already made to Watson as by anything that happened on the practice field. Cleveland gave Watson $230 million guaranteed, and that kind of investment tends to create pressure that extends well beyond a position coach or coordinator.

There is also an added layer of irony here. Haslam himself once called the Watson trade a swing and a miss, an admission that seemed to signal the end of his tenure in Cleveland.

None of this is confirmed beyond Drennan’s sourcing, and Monken is unlikely to address it given how firmly he has stood behind his own version of events. Still, with Watson coming off a rough 34-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland’s home opener against the Carolina Panthers approaching in Week 3, any suggestion that this decision was influenced from above only adds to the scrutiny already surrounding the position.
