Browns Rookie Is Already Among Best At His Position

First-round picks and flashy stat lines usually dominate early-season rookie conversations, leaving the players doing quiet, unglamorous work overlooked. That pattern held true again in Week 1 across the league, where most rookie buzz centered on skill position players making highlight reel plays. Cleveland’s actual top performer from that rookie class did not touch the ball once. Pro Football Focus released its Week 1 rookie rankings, and the numbers tell a very different story about who impressed most in that debut.

Analyst Gordon McGuinness broke down exactly why Austin Barber stood out among every rookie in the league.

“Barber was the highest-graded rookie offensive lineman in the NFL this week, impressing both as a run-blocker and in pass protection. He allowed just one pressure, and his 96.8% PFF pass-block win rate ranked second among rookies. As a run-blocker, his 5.6% negatively graded play rate was tied with teammate Spencer Fano for the best mark among rookie offensive linemen,” McGuinness wrote.

Barber finished third overall among every rookie in the NFL regardless of position, trailing only Washington’s Antonio Williams and Kansas City’s Peter Woods. That places a rookie guard ahead of nearly every skill position player who debuted around the league last week, a notable outcome for a player who spent his college career at tackle before Cleveland moved him inside.

The transition itself makes the grade even more impressive. Barber played left tackle at Florida before Cleveland selected him in the 3rd round and shifted him to right guard, a position change that typically comes with an adjustment period against NFL-caliber interior rushers. Instead, Barber allowed just one pressure across the entire game and won nearly every rep in pass protection, numbers that read more like a seasoned veteran than a rookie making his first career start.

His performance carries added significance given how the rest of Cleveland’s offensive line fared in that opener. All five starters were new to their spots heading into 2026, and protection issues showed up in stretches against Jacksonville’s front. Barber and Spencer Fano stood out as the exceptions, both grading out as the top run blockers among rookie linemen league-wide.

For an offense still searching for consistency at other positions, having a rookie lineman play at this level is one problem Cleveland does not have to worry about heading into Sunday.
