The Cleveland Browns are developing some continuity on their offensive line, but maybe not in the manner they expected. After Austin Barber was a somewhat surprising starter in the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the rookie certainly earned another opportunity in Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Not only did Barber grade out as the top first-year lineman in the league in Week 1, but the Browns’ offensive line overall had a good game, according to blocking metrics, despite a 34-10 loss. Now, that line will return intact to give it another try.
That is because Browns veteran Teven Jenkins has been ruled out for the Buccaneers game, the second week in a row that he will be sidelined by a back injury.

During the offseason and preseason, Jenkins was seen as Cleveland’s likely starter at right guard. However, the Browns were always looking for a potential upgrade, trying several other players at the position during training camp before moving Barber from tackle to guard to give him an opportunity.
Jenkins also missed practice time during camp, which left the door open for Barber to take over. The third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft may have earned the job even if Jenkins were not injured, based on his play after moving to the interior.
Barber wound up as Cleveland’s highest-grade offensive lineman, according to Pro Football Focus, notably well ahead of fellow rookie Spencer Fano, a first-round pick who was making his NFL debut at left tackle. Now, Barber will return to his spot alongside veteran right tackle Tytus Howard, left guard Zion Johnson, and center Elgton Jenkins.
The completely rebuilt offensive line was cited as one of the reasons head coach Todd Monken chose Deshaun Watson as the Browns’ starting quarterback, as he maybe did not want Shedeur Sanders operating behind it while it developed the necessary chemistry. The more the line plays together, the more likely Sanders is to become the starter, perhaps as soon as next week for the home opener against the Carolina Panthers.
Jenkins has not been placed on injured reserve, which indicates the Browns expect him to return soon, but when he does, his starting job may no longer be available.
