Browns Defender Just Got Hit With A Costly Fine

NFL fans have heard far too many stories about players going broke after their careers are over. It’s one of the many reasons why it’s imperative to have a strong locker room culture filled with veterans who lead by example and teach the youngsters how to handle all the stressors that come with playing in the NFL, which is exactly what new head coach Todd Monken is looking to do in his first year with the Cleveland Browns.

Luckily for Browns defensive end Sam Williams, he is in his fifth year in the NFL and has a little under $10 million in career earnings. Unfortunately, those earnings took a little dent after a penalty he committed in the win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

Just over a minute into the game last week, Williams committed what was listed in the league’s accountability report as an unnecessary roughness infraction. Williams’ facemask penalty has now cost him a $6,361 fine, according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

Williams was the only Browns player listed on the league’s report, meaning Grant Delpit won’t be fined for his skirmish with Tristan Wirfs. At least it’s only a little over $6,000, which isn’t even enough to buy a 15-year-old Honda in this economy, so Williams should be fine.

This fine also doesn’t hold a candle to his three-game suspension for a personal conduct violation in 2024, which cost him over $200,000 in game checks. If he could get through that, he can get through this one as well.

It’s far from the end of the world, and Williams is quietly becoming an important part of this defense. He is making a solid impact in his first season in Cleveland and hopefully this slap on the wrist fires him up even more for a tough battle with the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
