The relationship between a head coach and a fanbase is built in special moments. Press conferences and wins in the standings matter, but fans remember the times a coach shows he understands what the team means to the city. Cleveland has not had many of those moments in recent years. Todd Monken gave Browns fans one to remember after Sunday’s win over the Carolina Panthers.
The team shared a clip of Monken celebrating with the crowd after the final whistle.

The video shows Monken making his way around the stadium, slapping hands with fans who stuck around to celebrate the 21-18 victory. It was an unscripted scene, and it quickly caught fire with a fanbase that has been starving for reasons to believe.
The timing made it even better. Just 2 weeks ago, the Browns were coming off a lopsided loss in Jacksonville, and plenty of people were bracing for a long season. Now they are 2-1 with back-to-back wins, and Monken has his first home victory as an NFL head coach.
Monken has built a reputation as a demanding, straightforward leader. He did not sugarcoat things this week when he called the struggling running game unsustainable, and his team responded with 131 rushing yards on Sunday.
His players also cleaned up their mistakes as the game went on. After committing 10 penalties in the first half, the Browns were flagged just twice after halftime and found a way to win a tight game in the final 2 minutes.
Monken also knows exactly what this city is like on a Sunday. He spent the 2019 season as Cleveland’s offensive coordinator, calling plays for a Nick Chubb team that saw Chubb rush for 1,494 yards. It was fitting that Chubb was back in the building as honorary captain for Monken’s first home win.
That 2019 season ended in disappointment, and the staff did not survive it. Returning as the head coach and immediately embracing the fans shows Monken is not running from that history.
Moments like this one matter for a franchise that has cycled through so many coaches. A fanbase that feels connected to its head coach is more willing to be patient during the rough stretches that are sure to come with a young roster.
Of course, high-fives only go so far. The goodwill Monken built on Sunday will last as long as the Browns keep competing, and he has already shown he will not settle for anything less.
