Winning in the NFL almost always comes with a cost. The physical toll of every game catches up with someone, and the celebration in the locker room is often tempered by a quieter concern down the hall. That was the case for the Browns after Thursday night’s victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 27-24 win put Cleveland alone atop the AFC North, but the scene afterward involving one of its most important defenders was hard to ignore.
Camryn Justice shared an update on Mason Graham after the game.
“#Browns DT Mason Graham left the locker room in a leg brace, on crutches,” Justice wrote.

That is not the image anyone in Cleveland wanted to see. Graham went down on Pittsburgh’s opening series when he was driven into the legs of tight end Pat Freiermuth on a running play, and his left leg twisted awkwardly as he fell. He walked off under his own power, spent time in the medical tent and then headed to the locker room. He never returned.
Todd Monken did not have an update after the game, and the team has not released a diagnosis or a timetable.
A brace and crutches do not confirm anything on their own, as teams often use both as a precaution until testing provides a clearer picture. Still, it is hard to view this as encouraging news.
Few players on this roster would be harder to replace. After managing just half a sack across 17 games as a rookie, the No. 5 pick in the 2025 draft has become the centerpiece of the defense. He entered Thursday with 4 sacks, tied for the 2nd most in the league, and had recorded one in each of the first 3 games.
He was chasing more history, too. A sack against Pittsburgh would have made him the first player in franchise history to get one in each of the first 4 games of a season.
Durability has also been part of his value. Graham had not missed a start because of injury since entering the NFL, and he missed only 2 games due to injury during his career at Michigan.
The impact of his absence showed up immediately. Pittsburgh marched 78 yards on 17 plays for the opening touchdown after he left.
The depth behind him was tested right away as well. Mike Hall Jr. stepped into his spot and was carted off with an ankle injury before halftime, though he returned in the 3rd quarter and earned a game ball for it.
The schedule offers one small break. The Browns do not play again until they visit the New York Jets on October 11, giving Graham 10 days to recover if the damage is minor.
If it is more serious, Andrew Berry may have to look outside the building for help on the interior. A defense that has carried Cleveland to a 3-1 start was built around Graham’s ability to wreck plays in the backfield, and there is no easy way to replace that.
