Some of the best trade deadline additions are players in need of a fresh start. Talent rarely disappears overnight, and a new scheme, new coaches or a different role can bring out the best in someone whose career has stalled. Contending teams are usually the ones willing to take that gamble. The Browns have been named as a possible destination for one player who fits that description.
Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports listed Kayvon Thibodeaux among his top trade candidates and pointed to the Browns as a potential landing spot.
“Kayvon Thibodeaux was expected to step up with Brian Burns’ season-ending injury, but he recorded just two combined tackles and zero sacks playing 95.5% of defensive snaps vs. the Cardinals on Sunday. It remains to be seen if the Giants would want to move him for a Day 3 pick, but why not if Joe Schoen/John Harbaugh have no interest in signing him to a new deal? A change of scenery could give him a boost,” Dajani wrote.
The numbers explain why the Giants might be willing to listen. Thibodeaux has yet to record a sack this season and has just 1 quarterback hit through 4 games, a quiet start for a player now being asked to carry more of the load.
His production has been heading in the wrong direction for a while. Thibodeaux broke out with 11.5 sacks in 2023, then followed it with 5.5 in 2024 and only 2.5 across 10 games last season.
Still, the talent that made him the 5th overall pick in 2022 is hard to ignore. At 6-foot-5 and 258 pounds, he has the size and burst teams covet on the edge, and he is only 25 years old.
For the Browns, the appeal is easy to see. The defensive front has been stretched thin with Mason Graham sidelined by MCL and ankle sprains.
Thibodeaux would also give opponents another problem to solve. Jared Verse has drawn constant double teams this season, which is a big reason he is still searching for his first sack. Pairing him with another former first-round pick on the opposite edge could make those extra blockers much harder to justify.
The price might be reasonable, too. Dajani suggested the Giants could move him for a Day 3 pick, and the Browns have extra draft capital from the Myles Garrett trade to work with.
There are complications. The Giants are 3-1 and may not be eager to weaken their pass rush after losing Burns for the season. Without a long-term deal in place, Thibodeaux could also be more of a short-term rental unless the Browns believe they can keep him beyond this year.
Whether he ends up in Cleveland or not, the fit highlights what the Browns need most as the deadline approaches. Mike Rutenberg’s defense has generated plenty of pressure without someone consistently finishing plays, and adding a player who can turn those pressures into sacks could be the difference in a tight AFC North race.
