Weather has a way of turning NFL games into grinding, low-scoring affairs. Footing becomes unreliable, passing windows shrink, and the team that avoids the costly mistake usually comes out on top. That is the kind of game the Browns found themselves in during the first half at MetLife Stadium.
Through 30 minutes, Cleveland trails the New York Jets 7-6 in a sloppy defensive battle.

The Jets struck first. Geno Smith found Garrett Wilson for a 32-yard touchdown midway through the 1st quarter, the kind of play the Browns hoped to take away with their man-heavy coverage.
Wilson has been the difference so far with 3 catches for 70 yards. The rest of New York’s passing attack has been quiet, as Smith has completed just 7 of 13 attempts for 95 yards.
Cleveland answered with a pair of Andre Szmyt field goals from 25 and 41 yards, pushing his streak of consecutive makes to 24. Both drives stalled short of the end zone, including the team’s only trip inside the 20, a familiar problem for an offense that has struggled to finish all season.
The bigger concern is the loss of KC Concepcion. The rookie was ruled out with a head injury after taking a big hit from Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Losing Concepcion removes one of Deshaun Watson’s most dependable targets in a game where completions have been hard to come by.
Watson has completed 10 of 17 passes for 85 yards and has been sacked 4 times. Isaiah Bond has stepped up as his leading receiver with 2 catches for 44 yards, while Denzel Boston has been held to 1 catch for 9 yards on 2 targets.
The running game has not offered much relief. Quinshon Judkins has 21 yards on 7 carries, and the Browns have just 39 rushing yards as a team.
The defense has kept Cleveland in it. The Browns have sacked Smith 3 times, with Maliek Collins accounting for 1.5 of them, and the Jets have managed only 135 total yards. With Mason Graham sidelined, the interior push from Collins has been a welcome sight.
Discipline has been a bright spot as well. After entering the week as the most penalized team in the league, the Browns have been flagged just twice for 10 yards, while the Jets have been hit with 7 penalties for 73 yards.
The margin is razor thin, which is familiar territory for this team. All 3 of Cleveland’s wins have come down to late drives, and Watson leads the NFL with 3 game-winning drives this season. If the defense keeps holding and the offense can find a rhythm without Concepcion, the Browns are in position to pull out another close one in the 2nd half.
