Quarterbacks get too much credit when their team wins and too much blame when it loses. The best ones understand that and keep the focus on the scoreboard rather than their own stat line. That mindset matters even more after a performance that falls short of the standard. Deshaun Watson took that approach after the Browns’ loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.
Camryn Justice shared Watson’s postgame comments.
“Not good enough to win. Overall, we didn’t get the W, that’s all that matters to me. I’m just trying to find ways to win. It’s hard to win in this league, especially on the road versus a good team like the Jets. They played hard but we didn’t get the W, so my performance really doesn’t matter,” Watson said.

Watson’s numbers were a clear step back from the efficient stretch that made him one of the early surprises of the season. He completed 15 of 33 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown, finishing with a 69.6 passer rating.
The circumstances did him no favors. Steady rain made throwing difficult, KC Concepcion left in the 1st quarter with a head injury, and Watson was sacked 7 times. That pressure disrupted the quick timing that had fueled his turnaround over the previous 3 weeks.
He still nearly delivered another comeback. Watson’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Boston with 6:15 remaining gave Cleveland a 12-10 lead, and he added 40 yards on 6 carries.
His refusal to talk about himself is consistent with how he has carried himself all season. Even as he climbed to the top of the league in game-winning drives and drew early Comeback Player of the Year buzz, Watson has kept the conversation centered on winning.
Calling the Jets a good team was generous considering New York entered the day at 1-3, but it reflected the respect he gave an opponent that made more plays when it counted.
Still, his performance does matter, and he surely knows it. The offense is built around Watson getting the ball out on time and making sound decisions, and when that breaks down, there is little margin for error on a team that has leaned so heavily on its defense.
The week ahead will put that to the test. The Browns may be without Concepcion, and Quinshon Judkins was seen in a walking boot after the game. Watson could be leading a shorthanded offense against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens on October 18.
