Special teams penalties rarely get much attention, but they can change a game. One flag on a punt return can wipe out good field position and force an offense to start deep in its own territory. In a season of games decided in the final minutes, the Browns cannot afford many of those mistakes. One of them from last week just cost a Browns defender some money.
Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reported that Daniel Thomas was fined $7,541 for a blindside block on a Titans punt.
“#Browns S Daniel Thomas was fined $7,541 for a blindside block on a Titans punt with 4:19 remaining in the first quarter. Thomas was flagged for the penalty.”

The penalty came at a bad time. Tennessee had just taken a 14-0 lead on Tony Pollard’s 2nd touchdown run, and the Browns needed a spark. Instead, the flag on the return pushed Cleveland back and made a tough start even harder.
The NFL outlawed blindside blocks several years ago to protect players who cannot see the hit coming, usually a blocker moving back toward his own end zone during a return. The penalty is 15 yards, and the league routinely fines players for it after reviewing the tape.
The Browns recovered from that early hole and won 27-24, but the fine is part of a pattern worth watching. Thomas is the 3rd Browns player fined in as many weeks. Carson Schwesinger was fined $14,899 for using his helmet against the New York Jets, and backup center Luke Wypler was fined $6,611 for unnecessary roughness in the 4th quarter against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Browns play with an edge, and Todd Monken has embraced that. But they were flagged 8 times for 48 yards against Tennessee, and they entered Week 5 as the most penalized team in the league. Monken was blunt after the Titans game that the team was “not perfect at all.”
Special teams has been a strength this season. Andre Szmyt has decided 3 games with field goals in the final seconds, and opposing punters have admitted they kick away from KC Concepcion. A clean return game helps protect that advantage, especially in a game expected to be close.
Thomas has been a reliable veteran presence in the secondary and on special teams. He was limited in practice Wednesday with an ankle injury, so his status for today is something to watch.
The Browns face the Pittsburgh Steelers at 1 p.m. with 1st place in the AFC North on the line. Both teams are 5-2, and the Browns have lost 22 straight regular-season games in Pittsburgh. With so much at stake, Cleveland cannot give away 15 yards on a punt return.
