Trade rumors tend to follow a predictable arc. They start with speculation, build as more reporters weigh in and eventually end with either a deal or a clear signal that the player is staying. For most of October, one Browns receiver sat at the center of that cycle. With just days left before the deadline, the picture is finally coming into focus.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported on where things stand with Jerry Jeudy.
“The Browns are not looking to trade receiver Jerry Jeudy and would only do so if someone offered premium picks. But most teams aren’t willing to part with their high selections, and the Browns are expecting Jeudy to be with them after Nov. 10,” Cabot wrote.
That is a big shift from how this story began. For most of October, it was reported that Jeudy could be had before the deadline.
The asking price kept rising from there. It was reported by many that the Browns wanted something in the early 3rd- to 4th-round range. Cabot’s report makes it clear the Browns would now need premium compensation to let him go.
Jeudy’s play has a lot to do with that. After a quiet first month, he has come up big in key moments. He made 2 important catches on the game-winning drive against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4, then caught all 4 of his targets for 69 yards against the Baltimore Ravens and earned a game ball from Todd Monken, who said the offense is better when Jeudy gets the ball. He added 4 more catches against the Tennessee Titans.
The money is part of the equation, too. Trading Jeudy would leave the Browns with $9.3 million in dead money this season and $25.4 million next year. Absorbing that for a mid-round pick never made much sense for a team leading its division.
Keeping him also gives the Browns depth for a playoff push. Rookies Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion have taken over as the top targets, but Concepcion has already missed time with a concussion, and having a veteran who has topped 1,200 yards in a season gives Deshaun Watson another reliable option.
Teams like the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Commanders have been mentioned as possible fits, so a late offer is still possible before November 10. For now, the Browns appear content to ride with the receiver they have.
The first chance to show it was the right call comes this afternoon in Pittsburgh, where Jeudy helped beat the Steelers a month ago.
