Every trade deadline produces a few ideas that make fans stop and look twice. Most of them never get close to happening, but they still spark debate about where a team stands and what it needs. For the Browns, the timing of this one could hardly be more interesting. With their starting quarterback in the concussion protocol, one analyst believes Cleveland should look outside the building for help at the position.
Seth Walder of ESPN named the Browns’ ideal deadline target, and it is quarterback Kirk Cousins.
“Raiders QB Kirk Cousins. The Browns are in an unexpectedly strong position with an actual chance to make the playoffs. The talk of Deshaun Watson’s improved play has been vastly overstated, as he ranks 28th in QBR. Cousins is playing much better (16th in QBR) and would likely get more out of the surging young playmakers. He would be a temporary solution at quarterback, but that’s better than trying to get to the postseason with Watson at QB,” Walder wrote.
That is a bold take on a quarterback who leads the NFL with 5 game-winning drives. Every one of Cleveland’s 5 wins has come on a score in the final 4 minutes, and Watson has been at the center of those finishes.
Walder is looking at the full body of work, though, and the numbers in between those late drives have not always been pretty. The offense has scored only 13 touchdowns through 8 games, and Sunday’s 27-6 loss in Pittsburgh was its worst showing of the season.
Cousins would bring a veteran presence to a young offense that includes rookies like Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion along with Harold Fannin Jr. He is in Las Vegas with a Raiders team that drafted Fernando Mendoza No. 1 overall in April, so his long-term future there is uncertain.
Still, a trade like this would be hard to picture. The Browns just made it clear they had no interest in moving Shedeur Sanders, who is taking 1st team reps this week with Watson in the protocol. Adding Cousins would push Sanders further down the depth chart at the exact moment he is getting his chance.
ESPN’s own outlook also complicates the idea of going all in. The Football Power Index gives the Browns just a 17.3% chance to make the playoffs despite their 5-3 record. ESPN projects Cleveland to hold the 15th and 19th picks in the 1st round of the 2027 draft.
The deadline arrives soon. A trade for Cousins would be one of the biggest surprises of the week.
