Football is built on the idea that teammates protect one another. When a player gets hit late or thrown around after the whistle, he expects someone in the same jersey to step in. Those moments can say a lot about a locker room, especially after a lopsided loss to a division rival. For the Browns, one of those moments from Sunday is still bothering their top pass rusher.
Jared Verse opened up Thursday about a play in Pittsburgh that left him frustrated with more than just the Steelers.
“That was the play that made me really angry…you’re doing dirty sh**. The lack of reaction by those around me had upset me a lot…that’s a conversation we’ve had, we’ve spoken about. I’ve made my concerns known, I made my issues known about the situation. I didn’t put them in a position…I didn’t let them know beforehand I was going to talk the way I talked to the Steelers. I’ve got to be better in that aspect.”

The play in question came when Steelers guard Mason McCormick threw Verse to the ground headfirst. Verse already said earlier this week that he had no respect for McCormick after the play. Now he is making it clear that the response from his own sideline bothered him just as much.
What stands out is that Verse did not stop at criticism. He admitted part of the problem started with him. Verse talked plenty about the Steelers before the game and stood by those comments afterward, but he acknowledged that he never let his teammates know he planned to take that approach.
That is a fair point. When one player sets the tone with his words, the rest of the roster has to be ready to back it up. If they are caught off guard, the reaction on the field may not match what the player expected.
It also shows that Verse is still learning how to lead in a new building. Verse is just a few months into his time in Cleveland after arriving in the Myles Garrett trade, and he is still building trust with this group.
The good news is that the conversation has already happened. Verse said he has shared his concerns directly with teammates, which is better than letting it linger heading into a road game.
Emotions clearly ran high in Pittsburgh. The Browns were flagged 9 times for 85 yards, including 2 taunting penalties, in a game that got away from them early.
Now the focus shifts to New Orleans. Verse was limited Wednesday with a knee injury and is still looking for his first sack as a Brown. A big game against the Saints would be the best way to turn this frustration into something positive.
