Losses to division rivals tend to leave a mark long after the final whistle. Sometimes it shows up on the film, and sometimes it shows up in the mailbox a week later. The Browns’ trip to Pittsburgh was one of their most frustrating afternoons of the season, and emotions boiled over more than once. Now, the league has handed down the bill.
Mary Kay Cabot shared the fines for 3 Browns players from last Sunday’s game.
“#Browns Tyson Campbell was fined $23,882 for use of the helmet; Quinshon Judkins was fined $11,941 for taunting and Sam Williams was fined $6,361 for taunting vs. the #Steelers,” Cabot wrote.

Altogether, the 3 fines add up to $42,184. Campbell took the biggest hit for a play the league ruled was an illegal use of the helmet. The veteran cornerback has been one of the steadiest players in the secondary since arriving in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.
Cleveland was penalized 9 times for 85 yards in the 27-6 loss, including 2 taunting calls. Those penalties stood out in a game where the offense could not afford to give anything away.
Judkins’ fine adds to what has been a frustrating stretch for the 2nd-year running back. The run game managed just 34 yards against the Steelers, and Judkins has been open about his frustration with how the offense has gone. Losing his cool cost the team yardage and now costs him $11,941.
Williams also got caught up in the emotions of the afternoon. The defensive end was flagged for taunting on a day when the Steelers controlled the line of scrimmage and ran for 200 yards.
The fines come during a week when the Browns’ toughness has been a big topic. Jared Verse said he was upset that teammates did not react when Mason McCormick threw him to the ground. The Browns clearly had plenty of fire in Pittsburgh. It just did not always come out in the right places.
Todd Monken will want that edge channeled better on Sunday. The Browns visit the New Orleans Saints with Shedeur Sanders making his first start of the season, and a young quarterback on the road cannot afford drives stalled by penalties.
For a team that has won all 5 of its games on a score in the final 4 minutes, discipline matters. The Browns need to keep the emotion and lose the extra flags.
