The Cleveland Browns only have a few days remaining until their preseason opener on Saturday at the Chicago Bears, and the team has officially announced that Deshaun Watson will be the starting quarterback in the game while Shedeur Sanders starts the second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. Week 1 of preseason is a great opportunity for many of the players fighting to make the regular season roster to make a statement and it’s going to be fun to see who steps up this year.
Of course, a lot of players are unfortunately going to be cut or demoted over the next few weeks. One player was already waived on Thursday as the Browns get closer to finalizing their roster for the preseason opener.
Cleveland shared on its official X account that the team has officially signed cornerback Jeremiah McClendon and waived corner Tyron Herring with an injury designation.

McClendon originally signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Illinois in this year’s draft. They released him in May, and now he has a new opportunity just before the season gets underway.
In college, McClendon played in 20 games over four years at Marshall, Charleston Southern, Florida International, and Southern Illinois. He didn’t see regular playing time until last season, when he posted 60 tackles, 11 pass deflections, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and a sack.
Herring signed with the Browns in May as an undrafted free agent out of Delaware. It’s an unfortunate development for him since he was recently taking some reps with the starters and backups, but he’ll now likely be looking for a new home altogether.
Cleveland could certainly stand to benefit from someone stepping up in the secondary since that was one of the major issues on defense this summer. Perhaps McClendon can be one of those guys. After all, he was a second-team FCS All-American in college and new defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg is on the lookout for more playmakers.
