With the preseason officially in the books, the next stop for the Cleveland Browns is Week 1 at the Jacksonville Jaguars. All the backups put forth an inspiring performance on Thursday night with a 37-13 throttling of the New England Patriots, highlighted by Dillon Gabriel’s impressive three-touchdown performance in the first half.
Unfortunately, the Browns now have some tough decisions to make to cut the roster down ahead of Week 1. The first wave of cuts has already taken place, but some analysts are wondering if the Browns may find a way to add instead of subtract ahead of Week 1.
During a recent episode of Afternoon Drive, Nick Wilson and Jonathan Peterlin discussed the first wave of cuts and shared their thoughts about what could happen next. Wilson stated that tight end and corner are two positions that could use some more depth and wondered if the Browns have a move or two up their sleeve soon to address those needs.
“I really do think the two things I’m certain they’re going to find are at least one if not two backup tight ends, and certainly at least one more corner,” said Wilson.

The Browns have Blake Whiteheart, Carsen Ryan, and Joe Royer on the depth chart at tight end behind Harold Fannin Jr. Tight ends Jack Stoll, Drew Biber, and Jermaine Terry II were all waived in the first cuts, so the tight end spot is quite barren outside Fannin and with Stoll out of the picture due to his injury, the roster lacks an ideal blocking TE to complement Fannin.
Corner depth has been an issue all offseason as there isn’t a whole lot to get excited about outside of Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell. Myles Harden will step into a full-time role at nickel and beyond him, it’s going to be interesting to see who else can step up to fill out this secondary.
Unfortunately, more cuts are coming, but hopefully some of the young talents made enough noise on Thursday to convince the coaching staff to let them stick around a little longer.
