Browns Defeat Patriots 37-13 To Close Out Preseason

The Cleveland Browns closed out their preseason slate in dominant fashion, defeating the New England Patriots 37-13 on Thursday night in a performance that gave fans plenty to feel encouraged about heading into the regular-season opener. While the starters largely watched from the sideline in this finale, the backups and roster hopefuls put together one of the more complete performances of the summer, particularly in the passing game and on the ground. With final roster cuts looming, several players used this last opportunity to make a strong final impression before decisions are locked in.

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel delivered the standout performance of the night, completing 12 of 15 passes for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns without a single interception, good for a perfect 157.9 passer rating. Backup quarterback Taylen Green also contributed in a different way, completing 5 of 7 passes for 27 yards through the air while adding 66 yards on the ground on just 8 carries, showcasing the kind of dual threat ability that has made him an intriguing developmental piece on the roster.

The receiving corps spread the ball around effectively, with Gage Larvadain leading the way with 5 catches for 48 yards, while Luke Floriea turned in an efficient outing with 3 receptions for 29 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 5 targets. Ben Patterson provided a big-play element with 2 catches for 71 yards, including a 52-yard connection that stretched the field for the offense. On the ground, Davon Booth added 40 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, while Raheim Sanders and Ahmani Marshall each chipped in double-digit rushing yardage, giving the coaching staff a good look at the running back depth as final roster decisions approach.

Defensively, Justin Jefferson led the way with 9 tackles, a sack and an interception.  Easton Mascarenas Arnold added an interception of his own, continuing to build a case for a role on the back end of the secondary.

With the preseason now complete, the Browns turn their full attention to preparing for the regular season opener against Jacksonville, where Deshaun Watson will make his first start of the year.
