Browns Player Makes Roster Despite Never Playing In High School

The Cleveland Browns’ 53-man roster includes one of the more remarkable backstories on the entire team, as cornerback Michael Coats Jr. secured a spot despite never having played high school football. Coats signed with Cleveland as an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia and his inclusion as the only undrafted rookie to make the initial roster only adds to the significance of an already unlikely journey to professional football.

Coats’ path to Cleveland ran through a college career that began at East Central Community College before stops at Nevada and finally West Virginia, where he closed out his final season in 2025 by starting all 12 games at cornerback and contributing on special teams. That senior campaign produced 30 tackles, 22 of them solo, along with 7 pass breakups and a fumble recovery, numbers that built on a career total of 84 combined tackles and 5 interceptions across his final 3 collegiate seasons. Having played 529 defensive snaps out of 565 total plays during his senior year, he showed the steady, reliable presence that eventually caught Cleveland’s attention as an undrafted free agent.

Coats securing his spot on the initial 53 stands as a notable accomplishment, but he will need to continue proving himself before earning significant defensive snaps, a role that mirrors the journey he has already taken to reach this point. His story adds a compelling subplot to a Browns roster already defined by unconventional storylines.  Coats now has the opportunity to prove that his atypical path to the NFL was no fluke, carrying the same determination that got him this far into whatever role he carves out on the active roster.
