Game-day injury updates can change a team’s plans in a hurry. Coaches spend the week preparing for several lineups, but they often do not know which players are available until a few hours before kickoff. Some news brings relief, while some leaves the staff waiting until warmups. The Browns got a bit of both on Sunday morning.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network shared the update.
“#Browns S Grant Delpit cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol and will play today. Meanwhile, CB Denzel Ward will warm up and see if he can go. Ward is questionable with a hand injury,” Rapoport wrote.

Delpit’s return is a significant boost. He left last week’s win over the Baltimore Ravens with a concussion, missed practice Wednesday and was limited the rest of the week. Clearing the protocol in time gives the Browns their veteran safety back for the start of a 3-game road trip.
Delpit has been a big part of this defense’s success. He sealed the Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers by intercepting Aaron Rodgers’ final pass and earned a game ball from Todd Monken for it.
His return also means Emmanuel McNeil-Warren is likely to go back to his role as the 3rd safety. The rookie played a career-high 54 snaps against Baltimore and ranks 2nd in Pro Football Focus’ rookie rankings, so Mike Rutenberg will have plenty of reasons to keep him involved.
Ward’s situation is less clear. The hand injury showed up on the report late in the week, and he was limited in Friday’s practice before being listed as questionable. Having him warm up before a decision is made suggests the Browns want to see whether he can handle the ball and press receivers at the line.
His availability matters because of how this defense plays. The Browns use man coverage more than any team in the league, and that approach depends on having a cornerback they can trust on an island. Ward has been that player, ranking among the league’s best in coverage early in the season.
If he cannot go, Tyson Campbell would take on a bigger role, and the Browns would have to lean more on their depth at cornerback.
The matchup could make it easier to manage. Tennessee’s offense has struggled all season, Cam Ward threw for only 102 yards last week, and top receiver Calvin Ridley is questionable after missing practice Thursday and Friday with a hip injury.
The Browns will release their inactive list about 90 minutes before the 1 p.m. kickoff. Getting Delpit back already improves the outlook, and if Ward clears his warmup test, Cleveland will have nearly its full secondary for a game it badly needs to win.
