Bridge quarterbacks are rarely meant to stick around. Teams sign or keep them to hold the position steady while a younger player develops, and the plan usually ends the moment the organization feels ready to move on. Every so often, though, the bridge starts to look like the destination. That is the question now facing the Browns.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network discussed Deshaun Watson’s future and believes he has changed the conversation around it.
“I think everyone went into the season knowing Deshaun Watson’s going to be a bridge guy. He’ll either play well or not. Shedeur will probably play pretty quickly, and the Browns will move on from there. Except the team is pretty good. Deshaun Watson has really solidified things in his career in a way he hasn’t for several seasons. Is he the Browns’ long-term future franchise quarterback? We simply don’t know that. If he leads to the playoffs or something, there’s probably going to be some conversations. But at the very least, here’s what Deshaun Watson has done. He has at least put himself in the conversation to be the quarterback next year if things go well, if he stays healthy, and that is a significant step for him,” Rapoport said.

Watson was coming off a full year away from the field after multiple Achilles surgeries; he was booed during the preseason, and many expected Shedeur Sanders to take over within weeks. After the 34-10 loss in Jacksonville, that switch looked even closer.
Instead, Watson has led the Browns to a 5-2 record and 1st place in the AFC North. Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans gave him his 5th game-winning drive of the season, the most in the NFL, and his first 300-yard passing game since arriving in Cleveland.
That changes the outlook for 2027. Watson is in the final year of his contract, and his $46 million salary has long made his future in Cleveland a financial question as much as a football one.
But a strong 1st half of the season does not answer every long-term question.
The rest of the quarterback room is part of this, too. On Monday, the Browns activated Dillon Gabriel from injured reserve and waived tight end Carsen Ryan to make room, so they are now carrying 4 quarterbacks: Watson, Sanders, Gabriel and rookie Taylen Green. Sanders also recently signed with an agent ahead of the November 10 trade deadline. The better Watson plays, the less clear the path is for the younger quarterbacks behind him.
The Browns also hold 2 first-round picks in 2027, which gives them options no matter what happens. For now, Watson has turned a placeholder season into a real audition, and the next stop is Pittsburgh. If he keeps winning games like these, the conversation Rapoport described will only grow louder.
