Concussion recoveries rarely follow the same timeline. Some players clear the protocol quickly, while others need extra time even after the medical boxes are checked. Teams also have to weigh more than just clearance, including how much a player has practiced and whether he is truly ready to take hits. The Browns faced exactly that decision with their starting quarterback this weekend.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Sunday morning that Deshaun Watson has cleared the concussion protocol but will not play against the Saints.
“#Browns QB Deshaun Watson has cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol but is expected to be inactive today, source said. Watson only practiced once, and Shedeur Sanders will start,” Rapoport said.

The news is a positive sign for Watson’s health. He reported symptoms Tuesday morning after feeling them Monday night, and clearing the protocol by the weekend means he is trending in the right direction. It also suggests the injury should not linger much beyond this week.
The decision to keep him out still makes sense. Watson missed practice Wednesday and Thursday, and Rapoport noted he was only able to practice once all week. Putting a quarterback on the field after a concussion and a single practice would be a risky move, especially with Sanders getting all of the 1st team work.
There is also the bigger picture. Watson leads the NFL with 5 game-winning drives and has been at the center of every Browns win this season. Protecting him for the stretch run matters more than rushing him back for 1 game.
For Sanders, nothing changes. He was already named the starter Friday and has spent the week preparing with the starters. Now the Browns can commit fully to his game plan without any uncertainty about a late switch.
Watson being inactive does mean Cleveland will need a different quarterback behind Sanders on game day. Dillon Gabriel would be the likely candidate after returning from injured reserve last month.
The Browns head into the Superdome as 2.5-point underdogs against a Saints team that is 2-5 and coming off its bye. A win would keep Cleveland within striking distance in the AFC North, while a loss would drop them to 5-4 heading into Tuesday’s trade deadline.
Watson’s clearance also sets up an interesting week ahead. If Sanders plays well, the conversation around the quarterback position will only grow louder. If he struggles, Watson should be ready to step back in when the Browns host the Houston Texans next Sunday.
Either way, Browns fans will get their first real look at Sanders in Todd Monken’s offense today.
