Chemistry between a quarterback and his receivers usually takes time to build. Timing, trust and an understanding of where each other will be all come from repetition. Sometimes, though, it clicks faster than expected, especially when a young receiver gets a quarterback willing to give him chances. That appeared to be the case in New Orleans on Sunday.
KC Concepcion did not need many words to describe what Shedeur Sanders brought to the offense after the overtime loss to the Saints.
“He’s a game changer,” Concepcion said.

Concepcion was on the receiving end of the biggest play of the game. Trailing 9-6 with 5:33 left in the 4th quarter, Sanders launched a deep ball down the right side, and Concepcion ran under it for a 64-yard touchdown. It was the Browns’ first touchdown of the day and gave them the lead late.
The rookie finished with 4 catches for 85 yards on 6 targets, an average of more than 21 yards per catch. That pushed his season totals to 37 receptions for 437 yards.
Sanders spread the ball around. Denzel Boston led the team with 6 catches for 98 yards, Harold Fannin Jr. caught the overtime touchdown and Jerry Jeudy made a key 30-yard grab to set up the game-tying field goal.
Concepcion’s comment also adds to the conversation about next week. Todd Monken declined to discuss the quarterback situation after the game, saying it was too soon. Deshaun Watson has cleared the concussion protocol and should be available against the Houston Texans.
Still, hearing a rookie receiver call Sanders a game changer says a lot about how the offense felt with him in charge. The Browns’ passing game finally produced explosive plays, something it had struggled to do for much of the season.
Monken now has a few days to weigh his options. Whoever starts at quarterback against Houston, Concepcion looks ready to be a big part of the plan.
