Words travel fast in the NFL, and they rarely stay in the context they were spoken in. A short clip from a press conference can get passed around social media, end up in an opposing locker room and turn into a storyline by the end of the week. Players often have little control over how their comments are framed once they leave the podium. Shedeur Sanders found that out firsthand ahead of his first start of the season.
Before kickoff in New Orleans, Sanders was asked about the Saints using his comments from earlier in the week as motivation.
“Everything I do to this point is taken out of context. … That’s just another trick in the media they use,” Sanders said.

The comments in question came from Sanders’ press conference earlier in the week when he talked about the Saints’ defense. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that the clip made the rounds inside the Saints’ facility, with head coach Kellen Moore bringing it up in a team meeting and players discussing it openly with reporters.
Whether Sanders meant it as a jab or was simply having some fun was always open to interpretation. His response on Sunday made it clear which way he sees it. In his view, the remark was never meant as a shot, and the story grew because of how it was presented.
Sanders has lived with this level of attention for years. As the son of Deion Sanders, every comment he has made since college has been picked apart. His slide to the 5th round of the 2025 draft only added to that spotlight, and becoming a starter again has turned it up even more.
Still, the media debate will matter far less than what happens on the field. Sanders is making his first start in Todd Monken’s offense against a Saints defense that had extra time to prepare. If he plays well, nobody will remember the clip. If he struggles, it will follow him into next week.
The Browns need him to let his play do the talking.
