Speculation about Cleveland’s motivations in this quarterback competition has taken plenty of shapes throughout the summer. As Watson’s enormous contract continues to factor into outside conversations about this competition, hosts Ken Carman and Anthony Lima pushed back on the idea that the front office might be steering Todd Monken toward starting Watson simply to justify that financial investment, rather than letting the decision come down to which quarterback has actually earned the job.
“They are not telling Todd Monken to play him to recoup some value, that’s not happening, guys,” Lima said.

Watson’s path back from two Achilles surgeries and a shoulder procedure has been well documented throughout this training camp, and it would be a natural assumption for some fans to wonder whether ownership might quietly push for Watson to start regardless of how the competition plays out, simply to avoid the appearance of a costly mistake.
Watson’s own performance throughout camp offers little evidence to support the idea that he needs help to justify a starting role. His efficient outing during the preseason opener against Chicago, an 11 of 15 showing, reflected a strong command of Monken’s offense. Shedeur Sanders has received comparable opportunities throughout this same stretch, including extended first-team reps across multiple practice days this week alone as he prepares for his own preseason start against Buffalo.
With that start now just days away, and national reporters suggesting Cleveland could name its starter shortly afterward, theories like this one will likely continue circulating among Browns fans, but the far simpler explanation that is likely is that Monken is simply trying to determine which quarterback gives his team the best chance to win games in 2026.
