Some of the most impressive streaks in football are the ones nobody notices until they are about to end. They do not show up in a highlight reel, and they rarely get mentioned on a broadcast until a milestone is within reach. Thursday night nearly brought one of those streaks to a close for the Browns. Instead, by the narrowest of margins, it lives on and is now closing in on NFL history.
The Browns’ defense has now gone 49 straight games without allowing a 300-yard passer. The NFL record is 52 games.
“Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 299 yards. By the skin of their teeth, the Browns’ defense continues what is now a 49-game streak without allowing a 300-yard passer. The last quarterback to eclipse 300 passing yards on the Browns was former Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew II in Week 7 of the 2023 season, when he threw for 305 yards, though the Browns prevailed. This is the NFL’s longest streak since Indianapolis logged a 52-game streak from 2005-08,” Harris wrote.
Aaron Rodgers came within a single yard of ending it. The 4-time MVP spent the night picking at a defense that sacked him 5 times, and his final throw was intercepted by Grant Delpit at the Cleveland 18 with 1 second left.
The Browns now sit 3 games away from matching the Indianapolis mark and 4 games from breaking it. Holding on that long will not be easy.
What makes the streak remarkable is how much has changed while it has been running. It began under Jim Schwartz, survived his departure and continues in Mike Rutenberg’s first season as defensive coordinator. It also outlasted the Myles Garrett era, with the defense keeping it alive even after trading away a 2-time Defensive Player of the Year.
The secondary deserves much of the credit. Denzel Ward has been a constant throughout the run, and both he and Delpit picked off Rodgers on Thursday.
The schedule ahead will put it to the test. The Browns visit the New York Jets on October 11, then host Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens on October 18. Jackson is a 2-time MVP who can beat a defense through the air and on the ground, making that matchup the biggest obstacle standing between the Browns and the record.
Mason Graham’s injury adds another wrinkle. Pressure up front is one of the best ways to limit a passing attack, and the Browns will be without their sack leader for at least the trip to New York.
Streaks like this are fragile, and one shootout can end it in an afternoon. If the defense can keep it going for another month, though, it would be a fitting reward for a unit that has carried Cleveland to a 3-1 start and is quickly becoming one of the most dependable groups in the league.
