Some streaks become part of a rivalry’s identity. They get mentioned every time the 2 teams meet, they hang over the players who were not even born when they started, and they shape how fans approach the game. In this rivalry, one streak has followed the Browns for more than 2 decades. Today, they get another chance to end it before it reaches historic territory.
Adam Schefter of ESPN laid out the stakes.
“The Browns have lost 22 straight regular-season games in Pittsburgh, and have not won a regular-season game there since Oct. 5, 2003 — 8,248 days ago. They are one loss today shy of tying the NFL record for most consecutive road regular-season losses vs. a team in NFL history that the Lions currently hold, losing 23 straight games at Green Bay from 1992 through 2014,” Schefter wrote.

The length of the streak is hard to process. The Browns have gone through nearly every possible situation in Pittsburgh since 2003: rebuilding seasons, quarterback changes, coaching changes and even a couple of playoff years. None of it has produced a regular-season win at the Steelers’ home stadium.
The only bright spot came in the postseason. The Browns won a Wild Card game in Pittsburgh after the 2020 season, but that does not count toward this streak.
Tying the Detroit Lions’ record would add another painful chapter. The Lions lost 23 straight games in Green Bay over 2 decades, a streak that became one of the best-known examples of a franchise struggling in a rival’s building.
This Browns team, though, looks different from most of the ones that lost in Pittsburgh. Cleveland is 5-2 and in 1st place in the AFC North, and it already beat the Steelers 27-24 in Week 4 on Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left. A win today would give the Browns their first season sweep of Pittsburgh since 1988.
The formula has been consistent. All 5 Browns wins came on a score in the final 4 minutes, and Deshaun Watson leads the NFL with 5 game-winning drives. If today’s game is close late, Cleveland has shown it can finish.
Kickoff is at 1 p.m. A loss would put the Browns in the record books for all the wrong reasons. A win would end one of the longest droughts in franchise history and give Cleveland a 2-game head-to-head edge in the division race.
