The Cleveland Browns have been playing above expectations through the first six weeks of the season. One key reason for their success has been their work on the defensive side of the football. The Browns have been holding their own on defense early on.
The success on defense is a team effort, but there are some players who are going above and beyond. Linebacker Carson Schwesinger has been outstanding early on and deserves a ton of credit.
Recently, Browns defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg talked about what Schwesinger brings to this team.
“I don’t know if there are enough adjectives to describe it,” Rutenberg said of Schwesinger. “The way he works, the way he prepares, and the way he shows up for his teammates, it’s unbelievable. Everybody will celebrate the great forced fumble, obviously, but his preparation through the week, the way he runs the defense, the way he attacks his job is unbelievable. And it’s because he does it for his brothers and his team, and then he’s rewarded for it by the way he plays.”
Schwesinger has come up huge for the Browns over the last two games. The 23-year-old has forced a key fumble in both contests, but he’s bringing more to the table than that. Schwesinger has recorded 56 tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack in six games.
The Browns needed a leader after Myles Garrett departed this past offseason. Schwesinger has stepped up and is looking like the anchor that the Browns need on defense. He’s doing everything right, beginning with practice, working with his teammates, and putting out the results on the field.
It’s only Schwesinger’s second year in the league, and he’s already looking like the leader that this defense has been lacking. He was outstanding during his rookie season with 156 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two interceptions in 16 games last season. Schwesinger has a chance to surpass that performance if he keeps the pace he has going right now.
It’s about doing everything right, and that’s what Schwesinger brings to the table. He’s putting out the results on the field, but it’s much more than that.
He’s a great teammate and a leader on defense, so hopefully the Browns will keep him around for years to come.
