The Cleveland Browns already had plenty to sort through following a lopsided loss to the Jaguars, and now the fallout appears to include a significant injury concern in the backfield. Dylan Sampson was ruled out during Sunday’s game with a knee injury, and the update that followed after the final whistle only raised more alarm about how serious the issue might be.
Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot shared what she observed from Sampson following the game.

Crutches and a brace are never a good sign, and it suggests this is more than a minor tweak that will clear up in a few days. Sampson was pulled from Sunday’s game after suffering the injury, and seeing him unable to put weight on the leg afterward points toward something that could sideline him for an extended stretch, though the full extent will not be clear until testing confirms the severity.
The timing adds another layer of difficulty for an offense already dealing with instability. Sampson entered the season as part of a crowded backfield picture, but he flashed real ability as a rookie in 2025, posting 175 rushing yards and 271 receiving yards across 15 games while showing a knack for making plays as a receiver out of the backfield. That two-way skill set gave Todd Monken’s offense a versatile option, and losing him for any real length of time removes a piece that had shown promise even in a limited role.
Quinshon Judkins now becomes even more central to the rushing attack if Sampson’s injury keeps him out, a workload increase that comes at an inconvenient moment given how difficult Sunday’s opener already was for the running game.
Injuries are an unfortunate reality early in any season, but stacking one onto an offense already searching for answers at quarterback and along the offensive line compounds the difficulty of finding stability in year one under Todd Monken. More clarity on Sampson’s injury should emerge in the coming days.
