Some players mean more to a franchise than the numbers. They become part of the identity of the team and the city, and their departure never feels quite right no matter how it happens. For Cleveland, few players in the modern era fit that description better than Nick Chubb. Now the story of his career is getting the ending Browns fans have been hoping for.
Adam Schefter shared the news on Thursday.

Chubb announced his retirement from the NFL last month at 30 years old.
His résumé speaks for itself. Cleveland selected him with the 35th overall pick in 2018 out of Georgia, and over 7 seasons he ran for 6,843 yards and 51 touchdowns in 85 games. That ranks 3rd in franchise history in both categories, trailing only Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly.
Chubb made 4 Pro Bowls and was named 2nd-team All-Pro in 2022 after a career-best 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was also a central part of the 2020 team that ended a long playoff drought and won in Pittsburgh.
The efficiency stands out most. Chubb finished with a 5.0 average on 1,462 career carries, and he is 1 of just 4 running backs in NFL history to average more than 5 yards per carry with at least 1,000 attempts.
The what-ifs will always be part of his story. A devastating knee injury against the Steelers in Week 2 of 2023 changed everything, and while he fought his way back, he was never the same runner. After the Browns drafted Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson, Chubb spent 2025 in Houston, where he ran for 506 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Even in another uniform, he never distanced himself from Cleveland. His retirement message closed with a promise that he would always be a Browns fan.
Signing the one-day contract closes the chapter, but it likely will not be the last honor coming his way. When Chubb left for Houston, the Haslams said they looked forward to celebrating his career in the Ring of Honor, and Sunday may be the first step toward that day.
