Browns Worked Out Five Players Ahead Of Sunday’s Game

The Cleveland Browns are heading into a big matchup on Sunday as they welcome the Carolina Panthers to town for their home opener. Cleveland has a chance to go above .500 and rewrite the narrative around their season while the Panthers will be looking to get to 2-1 as well and maintain their spot atop the NFC South.

The Browns are heading into the matchup at near full health as well. Aside from now backup right guard Teven Jenkins, only Grant Delpit and Tyson Campbell have a questionable tag and both logged limited practices on Friday, though linebacker Nathaniel Watson did go down with a knee injury in Week 2 and push the front office to search for some reinforcements.

The Athletic’s Zac Jackson shared that the Browns held workouts for five potential signees on Friday. Among those players were linebackers Dominic DeLuca, Emany Johnson, and Marte Mapu, as well as running backs Hassan Haskins and Owen Wright.

Of the linebackers, Marte Mapu is the only one of the three to have regular season experience under his belt. He appeared in 44 games for the New England Patriots over the last three years and appeared in all of their playoff games last year, including the Super Bowl.

The 26-year-old Mapu played a lot of special teams for New England, but he has also shown some flashes as a linebacker. He had three picks and five forced fumbles over the past three years and it’s surprising someone like him is even available.

Haskins has handled 76 carries over 44 games of regular-season action for the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers over the past four years and has special teams experience as well. With the running game lacking in power and depth due to Dylan Sampson’s injury, it’s not a surprise that linebacker and running back were the two positions featured among Friday’s tryouts.

We’ll see if any of these gentlemen make it to the squad. There are a couple of solid depth pieces among this group who would make a lot of sense for Cleveland’s roster.
