The Cleveland Browns have had an unfortunate number of wide receivers come and go over the years without making the impact many expected of them. Certain big names like Braylon Edwards, Josh Gordon, and Odell Beckham have left many fans wondering what could have been, but the WR room seems like it is in great hands for the foreseeable future now that KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston are in town.
Another notable name some newer fans may not remember is David Bell, who was a third-round pick in 2022 out of Purdue and posted 408 yards and three touchdowns in his brief three-year career. His time in the NFL was unfortunately cut short due to injury, and he is now making headlines as he has filed a major lawsuit due to that injury.
Senior NFL Writer with the Athletic, Jonathan Jones, detailed that Bell is suing the doctors and healthcare companies responsible for the core muscle surgery he had that ended his NFL career and nearly took his life. He is going after them for over $300 million.
“Former Browns receiver David Bell is suing the doctors and health care entities for more than $300 million in damages after alleging core muscle surgery repair nearly took his life and cost him his NFL career,” Jones posted.

In the suit, Bell alleges that the defendants participated in a scheme that pushed Bell to undergo surgery based on “misrepresented pelvic MRI findings” and that he didn’t need surgery at all. The surgery caused a severe injury to his femoral artery that required emergency vascular treatment, which saved his life and ended his NFL career in the process.
Bell’s lawyer, Brad Sohn, represents many victims of catastrophic injury, including some professional athletes. Sohn played football at Harvard as well, so Bell is in good hands.
The lawsuit is against Jefferson Health System and 14 others. The Browns are not being sued.
Bell officially retired almost exactly one year ago to the day after just three seasons in the NFL. He had a dominant college career at Purdue and unfortunately didn’t get to hang up his cleats on his own terms.
