Cleveland Browns GM Andrew Berry was potentially on his last legs as the guy running the show just a few years ago. Patience among the fan base was waning with the Deshaun Watson trade unfolding as poorly as possible and the team seemingly on a fast track to nowhere, but after the past two draft classes and Watson going through quite a rebirth, you’re not seeing anybody calling for him to be fired anymore.
The 2026 Browns have already matched last year’s win total through seven games and suddenly there are people wondering if Watson is going to get a contract extension, which would have been an unfathomable thing to say just two months ago.
During a recent episode of Set, Hut!, Russell Wilson stopped by to talk about the Browns and went so far as to say that Berry could be the favorite for the Executive of the Year award. He praised him for the Myles Garrett trade and believes he has another move up his sleeve before the trade deadline.
“The guy that nobody’s talking about that I think could be Executive of the Year is Andrew Berry. Andrew Berry making this decision to trade Myles Garrett, one of the greatest defensive ends of all time, and to pick up Verse, to bring him in, and then how he’s been so tough for this defense and just how these guys have responded together. Andrew Berry’s going to make a trade. I just have a feeling that he’s going to make a trade because he’s not scared to. The moment is now. If the moment is now, the moment is right now. The Cleveland Browns are going to go after it. And there’s no better person that knows how to make a big decision, a big move, than Andrew Berry,” Wilson said.
Even if Watson falls off a cliff down the stretch of this season, there are so many talented young pillars all over this roster. If Berry needs to bring in a young potential franchise quarterback, he has two first-rounders in 2027 at his disposal.
Heading into this season, most would have believed the Browns would be sellers at this point in the season. Trade rumors have swirled around Jerry Jeudy, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders, but trading them wouldn’t indicate that Berry is selling. He owes it to this team and this fan base to continue to be aggressive since this team is 5-2 and heading into a huge matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers with first place in the AFC North on the line.
It’s going to be interesting to see how he handles this deadline. Whatever happens, he has earned the faith of Browns fans and has their full confidence that he’ll do the right thing.
