Cleveland Browns fans get to enjoy the rest of Week 4 after taking down the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night and moving to 3-1 on the young season. It’s certainly not where most expected this team to be after four games, but largely thanks to the resurgence of veteran quarterback Deshaun Watson, this offense is humming and this team is rolling.
The calls for Watson to be benched for Shedeur Sanders are long gone and he is already generating some buzz to win the Comeback Player of the Year award. While that won’t be happening anytime soon barring something unforeseen taking place, second-year QB Dillon Gabriel comes off of IR on Monday and will force GM Andrew Berry to make a decision on the status of this quarterback room.
ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi recently stopped by on 92.3 The Fan to discuss the current state of Cleveland’s QB group. He believes Berry loves making quarterback trades, and while there isn’t an obvious move on the horizon or a player on the roster he is itching to deal, he’ll be open to making a move if he can find proper value.
“I’ll say this, Andrew Berry loves him a trade. He loves him a QB trade, whether that’s trading for one or trading away one. I don’t think he wants to necessarily give away anybody in that QB room, but if that value’s there, I think that he’ll definitely be open to it,” said Oyefusi.

Oyefusi didn’t single out anybody in particular, but the numbers indicate that something has to happen. Gabriel will have three weeks to ramp up in practice after coming off IR, so Berry won’t have to make a decision at least until the end of that time period. It’ll buy him some breathing room before he likely has to ship Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders out of town because Watson isn’t going anywhere if he is playing like this and rookie Taylen Green’s spot is likely safe since he is a first-year project.
Berry does know a thing or two about trading quarterbacks after shipping Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco out of town last year. With all the QB injuries around the league so far this year, surely there will be somebody willing to make a play for either Sanders or Gabriel, but it’s too early to speculate.
If Watson were playing well but the team wasn’t winning, there could have been a world where another team would trade for him so the Browns could turn to Sanders, but at 3-1, that ship has sailed. Something is likely to happen before the trade deadline, and as sad as it would be to see either Sanders or Gabriel shipped out, they might get a greater opportunity to show what they’re capable of in a different organization.
