Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken has quite the choice to make. No matter who he chooses for starting quarterback in 2026, he is going to face pushback and a lot of criticism.
While talking to 92.3 The Fan, Mary Kay Cabot conceded that many fans will be upset if Shedeur Sanders isn’t given the job of QB1. However, she also said that it may take some time for the new-look Browns to “gel,” and handing responsibilities to a proven veteran like Deshaun Watson may make more sense.
“I think there would a sense of frustration on the part of a lot of people, including a lot of Browns fans. We’re seeing things in practice that lead me to believe that this is going to take a little bit of time to gel…and I think I would probably rather have that kind of situation in the hands of a veteran,” Cabot said.

There are legions of fans who are ready and eager to see Sanders leading the team. But how would those people feel if the young QB is given the job, only to fail?
That’s a possibility, and not solely because of Sanders’ youth and inexperience. The Browns have gone through many changes during the offseason, which means there are plenty of players adjusting and learning how to work together.
They will need guidance from their head coach, Todd Monken. But these newcomers will also need leadership from their quarterback, and Sanders might not be ready to deliver that. He may not be the best choice as the team finds its footing at the start of the season.
Monken has said he is focused only on selecting the quarterback who will bring the most wins to the Browns. He knows that he may create frustration among fans, but he is thinking long-term and attempting to ignore the criticism that is sure to follow.
