Deshaun Watson has potentially rewritten the script of this Cleveland Browns season after his stellar Week 2 performance in a Week 2 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was arguably the best game he has had in a Browns uniform and has helped create legitimate excitement about the Week 3 home opener against the Carolina Panthers.
Regardless of how well Watson does this season, the writing is on the wall and there is almost no chance he is the long-term solution at the position. It’s not looking great for Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel either, so all eyes are on the 2027 draft where the next franchise QB hopefully awaits.
What was once hyped as an all-time great quarterback class is showing some weaknesses over the first few weeks of the college season. ESPN’s Tony Grossi was asked Saturday if he was watching a potential Browns QB option in South Carolina’s LaNorris Sellers, and he replied with a brief negative outlook on his draft stock.

At one point prior to last season, Sellers was in the mix to potentially be a top-three pick, but after opting to return to South Carolina for this season, he has yet to show any notable improvement. His Gamecocks were blown out by Alabama on Saturday to drop to 2-2 and has now thrown four picks in four games while being outshined by Kamario Taylor and Keelon Russell at QB over the past two games.
The last thing the Browns need is another project, so unless they see Sellers as a slam dunk option in the first round, he’s not the answer. Watson may lead this team to too many wins and eventually take the Browns out of the Arch Manning sweepstakes, but other QBs tearing up the college football landscape could begin rocketing up mock draft boards and make a lot of sense for this organization.
Names like Darian Mensah, Drew Mestemaker, and Trinidad Chambliss are going to be connected to the Browns quite a bit over the ensuing months, and none would be a bad consolation prize if Cleveland doesn’t land the first pick. However, for now the focus is on the Panthers and it’s nice that the team is at least good enough to shift focus away from that ’27 draft class for the time being.
