Rivalries in the NFL are built on more than standings. The emotions that boil over in the final minutes of a close game tend to linger, and they often set the tone for the next meeting long before it arrives. The Browns and Steelers have plenty of history in that department. Thursday night added another chapter, and Jared Verse made it clear he will not be letting it go anytime soon.
Verse explained what he was saying to Pittsburgh players after the Browns’ win on Thursday night.
“I was telling them like, ‘Y’all double-teaming. Y’all sliding. Y’all garbage.’ I was talking crazy to them. I don’t got no respect for anybody that plays too dirty and that does too much extra s**t after the game. Excuse my French. I can’t wait to see them again. It’s going to be a great time when I see them,” Verse said.

That is what the front office envisioned when it acquired Verse as part of the Myles Garrett trade. Replacing a 2-time Defensive Player of the Year is impossible, but a pass rusher who demands extra blockers can lift an entire defensive line.
It has not been a seamless start. Verse admitted earlier this week that he did not feel like himself through the first 2 games, and the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year has looked more comfortable since.
The Steelers left Cleveland at 2-2 after their 4th straight loss on a Thursday night and their 5th straight defeat at Huntington Bank Field. Frustration was bound to run high on their side, too.
Verse’s promise about the next meeting adds fuel to a rematch that already carries plenty of weight. The Browns sit alone atop the AFC North at 3-1, and the return trip to Pittsburgh could go a long way toward deciding the division.
For years, the Steelers did most of the talking in this rivalry. A young Browns roster led by a pass rusher with something to prove is starting to talk back, and so far, it has the results to support it.
