Trash talk only works when the results back it up. Players who talk before a big game know they will face the questions afterward, whether they win or lose. Some quietly walk back what they said, while others refuse to give an inch. After Sunday’s loss in Pittsburgh, one Browns defender made it clear which group he belongs to.
Jared Verse addressed his comments from earlier in the week after the 27-6 loss to the Steelers.
“I stand by everything I say,” Verse said.

Verse said plenty heading into the game. After the Week 4 win in Cleveland, he called Pittsburgh’s blockers garbage for double-teaming and sliding protection toward him, and he said he could not wait to see the Steelers again. This week, he said he was not worried about Cam Heyward, Pittsburgh’s offensive line or anyone else on the roster.
Sunday did not go the way he wanted. The Steelers ran for 200 yards, Jaylen Warren finished with 143 yards and a touchdown, and Verse made 2 tackles without a sack. On the other side, Heyward had 1.5 sacks and T.J. Watt added 2 as Pittsburgh brought down Deshaun Watson 8 times.
Standing by his words fits who Verse has been throughout his career. That confidence helped make him Defensive Rookie of the Year with the Los Angeles Rams in 2024 and a 2-time Pro Bowler. It is also why the Browns made him the centerpiece of the Myles Garrett trade.
Still, the timing of the comments makes this harder to defend. Former Browns center LeCharles Bentley called the team undisciplined after the game, and the Browns were flagged for taunting twice while trailing by 21. Talk becomes a bigger problem when a team is losing its composure.
Verse is still searching for his first sack as a Brown 8 games into the season. The best way to back up his words is to start finishing plays, and the next chance comes Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The Steelers rematch will have to wait until next season, and Verse will have a lot to prove when it arrives.
