Jared Verse is in an impossible situation for the Cleveland Browns this season. His name will forever be tied to the single-season sack record holder, Myles Garrett, after the two were traded for one another this offseason. He isn’t expected to single-handedly replace those 23 sacks, but his name will always be tied to Garrett’s and his performance will always be compared to Garrett’s by many, no matter how unfair or unreasonable that may be.
Through four games, this defense has collectively done a great job and has had no problem replacing Garrett’s pressure rate and sack total in the aggregate. Verse, however, has not shown up on the stat sheet and hasn’t recorded his first sack of the season just yet, though that doesn’t mean he isn’t making an impact.
Cleveland.com’s Lance Reisland shared a video breaking down Verse’s pass rushing clips from the Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He pointed out how while Verse hasn’t gotten to the quarterback yet, he is certainly making his presence felt.
“The foundation of Verse’s pass rush is getting his hands inside and working the bull rush. He plays with a ton of violence and push. These reps don’t show up on the stat sheet, but the quarterback knows he’s there,” Reisland said.

Verse had 7.5 sacks last season and has been getting better and better at just 26 years old. Again, he won’t be expected to be the new Garrett, but he has all the tools to blossom into a consistent double-digit sack threat for this franchise for many years to come.
If he can keep bull-rushing tackles and walking them back into quarterbacks’ laps, he’ll have no problem piling up quite a few sacks this season. The problem for him has been that other Browns have been getting there before he does, namely Mason Graham and Isaiah McGuire, who have combined for six sacks and ten tackles for loss already.
Verse has been as advertised for this team and is growing into quite the young leader. Browns fans are lucky to have him and it’s going to be fun to watch him make a name for himself in Cleveland and step out of Garrett’s shadow along the way.
