Contenders hit by injuries tend to be the most aggressive buyers at the trade deadline. A team with championship aspirations cannot afford to let a thin position group derail its season, and front offices with cap space usually find a way to fill the gap. Those situations often create the perfect landing spot for a player who has fallen out of favor elsewhere. One Browns veteran is now being connected to a team that fits that description.
Carter Bahns of CBS Sports labeled the San Francisco 49ers as buyers ahead of the November 10 deadline and listed Jerry Jeudy among their potential targets.
“San Francisco can never have enough weapons. The passing attack remains elite with quarterback Brock Purdy playing the best football of his career and Mike Evans doing what he always does as the No. 1 target. But the depth issues stemming from Ricky Pearsall’s season-ending injury […] Browns receiver Jerry Jeudy might be there for the taking, judging by how he has been phased out in favor of a couple of standout rookies,” Bahns wrote.
The 49ers have looked like the best team in football through 5 weeks. Bahns noted they already own wins over every other team in the NFC West, along with the Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins.
The receiver room is where the cracks are showing. Ricky Pearsall suffered a season-ending injury, and De’Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel have all dealt with ailments. Mike Evans has carried the load as the top target, but San Francisco needs reinforcements behind him.
That is where Jeudy fits. He would not be asked to be a No. 1 option, and a complementary role next to Evans in a timing-based passing attack could play to the route-running skills that made him a 1st-round pick and a 1,200-yard receiver in 2024.
The 49ers also have the financial flexibility to make it happen. They lead the league with $41.9 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap, and Jeudy’s $1.5 million base salary this season would barely register.
The bigger question is price. Jordan Schultz reported that the Browns want something in the early 3rd- to 4th-round range, while others have projected his value closer to a late-round pick. A Super Bowl contender with a pressing need may be the team most willing to meet Cleveland’s number.
For the Browns, moving Jeudy would further hand the offense to its young receivers. Denzel Boston has emerged as a legitimate Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, and Isaiah Bond flashed against the New York Jets, though KC Concepcion’s recovery from a concussion adds some uncertainty.
A deal with San Francisco would give Jeudy a fresh start on one of the league’s best teams and give Andrew Berry a chance to recoup value for a player who has fallen out of the rotation. With the deadline less than a month away, the 49ers could be the suitor that finally turns the rumors into a trade.
